In 2013, Ellie's 82-year-old Dad took his own life following a period of physical and mental health decline. Since this tragic loss she has been involved in many roles and projects in suicide bereavement support and prevention - she is the founder and CEO of Beside Yourself CIC, is a trained volunteer peer support group facilitator for Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide - SOBS, is the co-founder of Voices - People with Living Experience of Suicide, is a non-executive director of the Luna Foundation, is a suicide first aid trainer, and is a proud participant of the Orange Button Community Scheme.We talk with Ellie about suicide amongst older people, including the reasons why many are dying this way and why there isn't more focus on suicide in older adults. We also explore the extremely sensitive subject of Voluntary Assisted Dying, including the distinction between this and Assisted Suicide and the legal implications of helping someone you care about in either of these situations.

'When I started a career in advertising 20 years ago, I never thought I'd find myself climbing the railings of a bridge to jump in front of a high speed train. But in 2018 that's what happened.'Eight months prior to his moment of crisis, David's father suffered a severe brain haemorrhage and died at the age of just 64. Still reeling from the shock of his father's passing, just 5 months later his wife experienced complications during the birth of their first child. Despite an hour without a pulse and seven days on life support, she thankfully made a full recovery. But the combined traumas, including the loss of his job, took its toll mentally on David. Depression, PTSD and suicidal thoughts led to him one day climbing the fence at a railway station intent on taking his own life.It is, however, a story of hope. He shares with us how a caring psychiatrist ultimately saved his life and how he discovered a path back to a happier place. He now runs his own consultancy business teaching employees how to cope with stress, build resilience and manage their mental health.
